Linda’s Pet Portraits

I believe every animal, domestic or wild, possesses it’s own unique spirit. This is what I try to capture in my paintings.

The pet portrait begins with your inspiration photo. I freehand sketch the subject to a linen panel using the reference image on my iPad. The oil painting is rendered in classic impressionist style and use of color. Most of the images shown in this gallery are on 11X14 canvas panels. On this website I am offering 8×10, 11×14 or 16×20 linen panel sizes.

I use Senso linen panels, Gamblin oils, and the best brushes I can afford. Below are a few pet portraits for customers in oil. My customers have been friends I have met locally and through area markets and fairs. I look forward to your project, too.

To paint your pet I will need a good reference photo. Two or three photos or files would be helpful. I have a couple of suggestions for a good reference photo.

Place your pet near a window or natural light, if possible. Most phone cameras do a great job for photos. The use of natural light (no flash) brings out the true colors of the coat and reveals a pattern of light and shadow I can use to build the form of your pet in a painting. To keep things simple with a focus on the pet, I will use a simple, solid background color. If you wish another figure or a more complicated setting the price of the painting will increase.

Here is Cooper in the best of a few customer photos, He is in natural lighting with good form shadow. To the right is a small painting I made using the photo as a reference.
